On August 25, 2014, the ceremony to appoint researchers to the Shi Lu Art Research Center, receive the second group of donation of Shi Lu’s works and kick off compilation of the Complete Works of Shi Lu was held at the National Museum of China (NMC).
At the ceremony presided over by NMC Party Secretary Huang Zhenchun, Deputy Director Chen Lusheng introduced Shi Lu Art Research Center, 27 appointed researchers and preparation for the publication of the Complete Works of Shi Lu. Mr. Shi Guo on behalf of the Shi family, President of China National Academy of Painting Yang Xiaoyang, President of China Fine Arts Publishing Group Wang Jiaming, NMC Director Lu Zhangshen respectively delivered a speech. Director Lu also granted appointment certificates to researchers and a collection certificate to Shi Lu’s family.
As Director Lu pointed out, Shi Lu and his art played an important role in Chinese art history in the 20th century. The painting Transfer to North Shaanxi by Mr. Shi Lu and The Founding Ceremony of People’s Republic of China are hung on either side of NMC’s Central Hall now, revealing the artistry and significance of Mr. Shi’s works.
It is NMC’s responsibility to set up Shi Lu Art Research Center. To extend the influence of Shi Lu’s art, NMC organized the exhibition Shi Lu: A Revolution in Paint at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in March 2014, which won wide acclaim in the society. Mr. Shi Lu’s works have been popular among Western visitors, and some even visited the exhibition four times. This indicates that outstanding artworks are beyond borders of countries.
To promote Shi Lu’s art, NMC will organize a large exhibition on an appropriate occasion to facilitate related studies. Meanwhile, the Museum will collect results of the studies conducted by researchers from Shi Lu Art Research Center and publish the Complete Works of Shi Lu of high academic and artistic values jointly with the People’s Fine Arts Publishing House, which can carry forward Shi Lu’s art and spirit. This is also a specific way through which NMC promotes outstanding Chinese culture and practices the socialist core value.
In August 2012, Shi Lu’s wife Min Lisheng and their children decided to donate his works collected by them to NMC in groups. The first group of donation includes 151 artworks. On August 25, 2014, a total of 84 calligraphy and paintings, including three sets (58 pieces) of sketches, were donated in the second group, covering those created by Shi Lu from the 1950s to the 1970s. They made NMC an institution with the largest collection of Mr. Shi’s works.
To make a comprehensive and systematic study of Mr. Shi Lu’s art, NMC set up Shi Lu Art Research Center headed by NMC Director Lu Zhangshen on September 21, 2012, and started the preliminary preparatory work. To promote and deepen the study of Shi Lu’s art, NMC, on August 25, 2014, decided to officially employ the first group of 27 researchers including Shao Dazhen, Li Shusheng, Lang Shaojun, Liu Xilin and other art historians as well as Shi Lu’s family members Shi Guo, Shi Dan and Shi Jia.
As early as 2013, Shi Lu Art Research Center began to prepare for the compilation and publication of the Complete Works of Shi Lu. By far the Center has completed collation of the chronicle of Shi Lu’s life, framework design and part of the writing. The book is expected to be published at the end of 2016.
